Athens, GA August 19, 2008 The 24th Annual North Georgia Folk Festival will be held at Sandy Creek Park, Athens, Georgia, on Saturday, September 20, 2008. The day-long program dedicated to traditional folk art and music will feature musicians, artists and craftspeople from north Georgia and the southeast. The day will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a childrens program featuring make and take crafts and music by Pam Blanchard and the Sunny Side Up Band, and will continue until 9:00 in the evening with music on two stages. Musical performers include the Packway Handle Band, Lizzy Long and Llegacy, Cary Fridley and Down South, Phil Tanner and the Skillet Lickers, Doug and Telisha Williams, Sister Fleta Mitchell and Trio, Mary Lomax and Bonnie Loggins, Tony Bryant, Tabby Crabb, hope for agoldensummer, The Corduroy Road and Splinter Belly. Craft demonstrations planned include blacksmithing, metalsmithing, broom making, spinning, quilting, and painting. Art vendors will be selling handmade crafts such as jewelry, pottery, walking canes, crocheted rugs, along with gourds, grits and corn meal, and heirloom seeds. Additional activities planned for the day include afternoon banjo, fiddle and guitar workshops and acoustic jams. Food will be available on-site.
The North Georgia Folk Festival is open to all. Families are encouraged to come and help their children develop an appreciation of traditional folk art and music. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students with ID. Children under 12 are admitted free.
New this year is a pre-festival kick-off contra dance and acoustic jam to be held Friday evening, September 19, 2008 at Memorial Park in Athens from 7:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. This event features a caller and live band and is open to anyone who is interested in folk dance, regardless of their experience. Beginners can learn the basics between 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., when the dance starts in earnest. At the same time, acoustic musicians will gather outside of the dance hall for an evening jam featuring old-time and bluegrass music. The public is invited to come and dance, watch, listen, or bring their instruments and participate in the jam.
